Tuesday, 5 April 2016

Mining firm Gold Fields Ghana has handed over a tented camp worth 300,000 dollars to the Ghana Forestry Commission.

This is a major boost for the tourism industry as it will help generate revenue from a range of commercial tourism activities and various land use.

Ghana’s tourism sector, is one of highest foreign exchange earner for Ghana after gold, cocoa and oil, contributing an estimated $2.1 billion to the country’s GDP. The sector also provides over 122,000 jobs for individuals.

The potential for tourism growth in Ghana is huge. The country possesses considerable and diverse tourism assets that can be leveraged with tourism support services, infrastructure and marketing to accelerate tourism growth and employment.

However, inadequate investment in the tourism sector; poor infrastructure and a lack of support is hampering revenue generation in the sector.

Speaking about the donation, the Director for the Shai Hills, Gwendolyn Wellman applauded Gold Fields Ghana for the project, saying with projects like this as well as other infrastructural development, she does not see why Ghana cannot compete with Eastern or Southern African countries noted for their huge tourism activities.

The Operations manager for the wildlife division Luri Kantonwho who was present at the donation ceremony also called on private investors and government to show interest in developing the tourism sector.
