Gold Fields top SA mining company in Sustainability Yearbook
Johannesburg, 20 January 2015: Gold Fields Limited (Gold Fields) (JSE, NYSE, NASDAQ Dubai: GFI) is the top ranked South African mining company in the 2015 Sustainability Yearbook, one the most recognised publications highlighting the sustainability performance of listed companies worldwide.
The rankings in the Sustainability Yearbook, which was released by investment firm RobecoSAM this week, are based on the same methodology as utilised for the annual Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) compilation.
The Sustainability Yearbook ranks the sustainability performance of the world's 2,000 largest companies. Among other factors, it measures management practices surrounding economic, environmental and social engagement approaches.
Gold Fields’ 81% rating in the 2014 DJSI (2013: 78%) qualifies it for a Silver Class Award in the Sustainability Yearbook as it is within five percentage points of the mining sector leader, Canada’s Barrick Gold. This is the fourth successive year that Gold Fields has received a Silver Class award, which places the company in the Top 5 of globally listed mining companies and indicates that its sustainability practices rank with the best of resources companies worldwide.
"The strong ranking shows that we are making good progress on our journey to leadership in sustainable gold mining," says Gold Fields CEO Nick Holland.
"Implementing sustainable business practices at all our operations is essential if we are to succeed in being the gold company of choice for investors, communities and government. This incorporates high standards of safety and health practices, sound environmental stewardship and pro-active community engagement, including shared value creation with communities," Holland adds.
